The Thorn Scholars Program

Ursula Kaiser, M.D. was named our first Thorn Scholar, thanks to a generous gift from Frances E. Cohn and her late husband, Samuel. Armed with this support for three years, Dr. Kaiser laid the foundation of a research program that attracted additional federal funding, sufficient to sustain its productivity, from the National Institutes of Health and other sources, thus completing her program a year early.

Dr. Kaiser, has a special interest in disorders of the pituitary gland, particularly those involving hormones that are key to reproductive development and function. She is studying the regulation of the genes that serve as blueprint for these hormones, which in turn orchestrate puberty, the menstrual cycle and menopause. She hopes that her insights will contribute to the design of more effective fertility and contraceptive therapies.

We are currently assessing several well-qualified applicants to identify another Thorn Scholar if funding becomes available.
